Week 20: The Power of Pressure
There’s actually a lot of power in pressure, a little bit of it added on can really move the dial on things.
We all have an enormous list of to-do’s we need to complete when we’re working on a project, or even just day-to-day at our jobs, and despite our greatest intentions to clear them up as soon as possible, there’s something about having a fire lit under our a$$ that gets us to finally tackle the most mundane of tasks.
We officially launched our platform publicly earlier this week — and could I have done it sooner? YES. The waitlist landing page has been ready for a couple of weeks now. But mixed with not wanting to build too much momentum too far in advance of the beta launch (so it doesn’t drop off), there were also many reasons it needed to launch when it did, as it tied to other tasks on my to-do list.
For example, we needed to get the waitlist up because we need to build traction ahead of our pre-seed raise, which is right around the corner. And in order to announce the waitlist, we needed to decide on a URL (because I wasn’t quite happy with our initial one), and I honestly couldn’t decide on this for weeks. The Instagram handle, TikTok, and LinkedIn pages were all going to have to have the same name, too for consistency and easy cross-platform recognition. So, the pressure of needing to get the waitlist live pushed me to finally settle on a URL and then register all of the social accounts.
Another example. There’s a whole side to setting up your business in preparation for funding that is highly unglamorous. Those administrative documents that need to be created are no joke, and they’re definitely not fun, BUT they are required. So, despite having most of my docs lined up since I completed them during my accelerator (thank god), I still had a few final tasks that I literally could not raise without. Like applying for a share redistribution for me and my co-founder — because when I set up the company initially, I was the director and sole founder, but over the past few months, once we really started building, that changed. Government documents and portals are a pain, hard to navigate, unclear, and tedious.
But these non-negotiable tasks are the kind of pressure we sometimes need to get the ball rolling at the speed it actually needs to move things forward.
